Whilst you may regard insurance as one of those unnecessary evils, it is absolutely essential nowadays that the holidaying diver is adequately covered against diving accidents. Although most dive accidents are not medically serious, it is likely that even a minor injury may incur costs that mount up very quickly. The costs of medical treatment increase each year, and should you be one of the unlucky few that requires hospitalisation or recompression treatment whilst scuba diving abroad, you could be putting your personal finances at risk if you do not have adequate diving insurance cover. In accordance with Spanish law (B.O.E. n° 280, 22nd November 1997, Ministerio de Fomento) it is mandatory that all divers have personal accident and third party liability insurance. At ISLAND WATERSPORTS, we put safety to the forefront in all of our scuba diving activities, but we are always mindful that the unexpected could happen to any diver, at any time and not for any particular reason. When you register to dive with us we will ask you to provide details of your insurance cover, including name of the insurance company, policy number, date of policy and the procedures to follow in the event of an accident. We will also require sight of the insurance document. If you are unable to provide proof of insurance then we are able to effect immediate cover on your behalf.Ordinary travel insurance policies MAY NOT cover you for scuba diving activities, or may only provide very limited cover.Remember that most specialist diving insurance companies will provide a warranty in their policies that it is a fundamental requirement that recreational sport diving activities are carried out in accordance with the guidelines and recommendations for safe diving practices as laid down by your certifying agency (e.g. BS-AC, CFT, PADI, SAA, SSI etc). This is of paramount importance with regard to the depths that you intend to dive to.As insurance policies can be a potential minefield, please make sure that the insurance cover you take out is for PERSONAL ACCIDENT and includes THIRD PARTY DIVER LIABILITY.It is also worth noting that annual policies work out cheaper in the long run, especially if you plan a couple of trips abroad each year. Here is a sample of websites that you may care to check out for details of insurance cover on offer:www.daneurope.orgwww.diveassure.comwww.divinginsuranceuk.comwww.dive-master.net
