Lanzarote is an island that is just crying out to be explored. It is actually quite upsetting for a resident to see people visit us and stay within the confines of their hotel. There is such a huge variety of places to visit it seems a shame not to experience the island, even if only for a day.
Car hire is inexpensive and udoubtedly the best way to visit even the most remote of places. The roads are good, easy to navigate and as any goat worth his bleat will tell you, the dirt tracks are also getting better every day!
DON'T FORGET you will need BOTH parts of your driving licence, the picture ID card AND your paper section. Car hire in Lanzarote is simple and you don't get the usual huge deposit needed prior to hiring that you are asked for in the UK. We'd always reccomend keeping a photocopyof your passport in the glovebox just in case, it will always come in handy when you're shopping as well.
The taxis here have a special rate for full personalised island tours and if there's a few of you it is extremely good value too. There's arranged coach trips from many suppliers and if you are really sporty then cycling around the island is an incredible experience and a bit of a challenging one too, given Lanzarotes windy reputation.
As far as the law is concerned, the Spanish authorities take road safety very seriously. In many Europeans eyes perhaps ridiculously so. However, with so many people from different countries using the roads it is worth their taking every effort to ensure safety so we don't complain.
Three important things to note are..
The legal limit for drinking and driving IS LOWER here than the UK
It is now law for drivers to wear footwear that encases the heel of the foot when driving. Flip Flops are illegal and you can get fined and have points added to your licence.
Spain takes the using of mobile phones whilst driving just as seriously as the UK.
