Christian Honerkamp
Christian Honerkamp was born in Munster Germany in 1961. The completion of his studies in Art and Fashion Design marked the beginning of a long and varied artistic journey culminating in MAGMA, an exhibition which highlights some of his most recent work.
In the summer of 1991, Christian came to Lanzarote for the first time and was immediately captivated by the unique beauty of the island. The misty light which covers the lanscape every morning and the abstract forms of lava which surround and greet the eye, both fascinated and then drew him into the mysteries lying within the volcanoes. In fact, Lanzarote touched Christian so profoundly that he made the decision to move from Germany to live permanently here on the island.
From the moment of his arrival, Lanzarote became Christians true home. Firstly,living in Uga, the southern village from which one overlooks the vistas of Timanfaya and for the past eight years in the area of Tinajo, specifically in the the village of Tinguaton. Christian has his house, studio and galleries perfectly located there, on a rise above the lava seas of the Mountains of Fire, from which, daily views of the setting sun have become a constant source of inspiration.
Every day in his studio Christian produces new works of art for local and foreign clients, with regular exhibitions both on the island and further afield. His paintings are characterised by their vivid colours and contrasting use of inks and lacquers, the shades and textures of the materials brought together in an abstract dance of form and light.
In his canvasses, one is shown the many reds of the lava flows and can readily feel the flames of the volcanic interiors which lie beneath. Christians art allows the observer to angage with and be filled by the heart and soul of his beloved island.
I dont know whether its possible to escape the influences of other artists from Lanzarote in Christians work which, yet again, signifies the importance of the island and its culture in his current stage of artistic development. Sunday afternoons at Christians home, studio and galleries have become a permanent fixture . A time for meeting and conversing with art lovers, artists and their work both from around the island and around the world.
Thus, MAGMA, provides us with images of an internal nature, full of feelings that give us everchanging instinctive visions of places deep within and which our artist so readily translates onto canvas.
